Transportation In Oaxaca

Map of Mexico and Maps of Oaxaca (links to be added)

Local Travel: Casa Raab is located about 20 minutes from the center of Oaxaca and Transportation is an important consideration. There are several Transportation options, ranging from using taxis and busses exclusively, to renting a car, to hiring a van service to ferry you around. Choices depend on your budget, your personal preferences, and the size of your group.  With appropriate planning, Casa Raab is able to supply exceptional Transportation and guide services.

Taxis: For small groups (up to four+), taxicabs are a good source of local Transportation. A one way trip to or from Oaxaca will be about $10 us dollars. To get to Oaxaca you can call a local cab. Coming home, city cabs are readily available until around midnight. Village cabs can be hired by the day for about $60us. This is a great way to travel for groups of four or less, since it is about the same cost as a rental car, with the added bonus of a built-in-guide.

Busses are available, but you will have to walk a mile, or take a "moto-taxi" to catch one. The bus service is good, once you get into the system and understand it. We can advise you about bus service once you get to Oaxaca.

Rental Cars can be expensive, up to $65us daily. However, if you like to drive, have a smaller group, and want freedom to move as you wish, a rental car is great. Many guests in La Casita use rental cars. The price will be cheaper if you reserve and rent the car from the United States. Try Avis, Alamo, Hertz, and Budget. Prices fluctuate.

Casa Raab Transportation Services

Transportation for larger groups is usually a15 passenger van with air conditioning. Smaller needs are met with other vehicles.

The 15 Passenger Van , or other vehicle, with Driver-Guide costs $25 per hour. Hourly charges are rounded off to the half-hour.

Airport Arrival: The federal government protects the registered taxis and their exclusive rights at the airport. We cannot pick you up in our van. We can meet you at the airport and help arrange a van/taxi to get you to the Casa. The cost of one taxi-vanload is about $50. Meeting you at the airport takes about two hours, and we usually charge a bit for our time. Alternatively, to save money, you can give the printed Map to Casa Raab (link to be added) to your driver, and make your own way home. Usually, at least one of the taxi drivers will know where Casa Raab is located.

Airport Departure: We will help you to arrange the appropriate vehicle and Transportation to get you back to the airport at the end of your visit.

Touring

Casa Raab offers personalized tours, by the hour, in our 15 passenger van. Smaller groups, up to 6 people, can be accommodated in smaller vehicles.

Advance Planning:  We can help you to plan various trips, and estimate the time/expenses of each. This can be done in advance by email, or in Oaxaca. Normally a large “touring group” will spend about $1,000 per week for the 15-passenger van and driver/guide. The managers reserve the right to suggest or utilize taxis, when appropriate. One example would be a late night return from Oaxaca.

Typical tours: There are two major valleys that meet at Oaxaca City. It usually takes one day to explore each valley. There are many different types of attractions on each trip, and we design the tours to focus on the things of most interest to the group. We also stop at great restaurants along the way.

Handicraft Villages that we visit feature different kinds of pottery and sculpture, textiles and weaving, painted wooden animals and mezcal production.

Ancient Ruins, like Monte Alban and Mitla, are located in many locations, and we may visit several of them during our various excursions.

Mountain tours and Adventure Quests are a bit more demanding. We can drive into the mountains surrounding Oaxaca to explore the beautiful landscapes and diverse eco-systems. Trout fishing is usually available in the mountains, depending on the season. These are usually one day trips into remote locations that the typical tourist never visits.

Please go to the FAQ section for more detailed information about the tours, villages, and market days.

Adventure tours are multi-day events in which clients can be "on the road" for several days as they visit remote and fascinating locations in southern Mexico.

Folks going on tour, whether one day or longer, still "occupy" Casa Raab while they are gone. All the rooms are cared for on a daily basis. All valuables and purchases are locked away and guarded. "Home" is waiting for you when you return, and usually a nice meal as well.
